Dylan was running at the stranger who had the unconscious Dareli over his shoulder as Daniel was kneeling down at the end of the hallway. He was taking a hand-sized black box out of his pocket, opening it and pulling out a blow gun and a small dart. Taking aim for Dareli’s bare neck as her hair fell forward, he blew into the blow gun and the dart shot out, imbedding itself in her neck. Knowing nobody had a chance of saving her from the great, ebony dressed man, Daniel put a tracking device in her neck. It was unnoticeable, indictable and indestructible.
Soon, the man disappeared in a cloud of black smoke with Dareli slung over his shoulders, just to reappear outside the door of the baby’s room, which was right behind Daniel. Daniel took another tracking device the size of a grain of salt and gently put it on the end of a knife, stabbing it into the man’s ankle. The man yelled in pain and kicked Daniel away, balancing on one foot. Realizing it was hopeless to carry Dareli and the baby; the man disappeared in the same cloud, but didn’t return. Dylan ran to where he was and looking around, searching for something he would never find. Daniel got up calmly and explained what he did, Dylan staring blankly and nodding, trying to understand.
“We can always know where she is by my laptop.” Daniel said, picking it up from the floor and opening the slick, black laptop. On the screen was a map of their town, and two little, very close together red dots were blinking and moving rapidly through the streets. With a few clicks of the keyboard, you could see a satellite image of a very new red Honda that was heading into the country and then into vast acres of woods. In the middle of the woods, the car stopped, now just a red blur beneath the leaves, and the ground started to quack. The trees and ground shifted and whirred, moving apart to reveal a metal underground area where the car disappeared. The ground closed up again, the two little dots returning on the map, now stopped in one spot. After staring at the bleeping screen for a few minutes, Dylan finally tried to walk away, only to be caught by Daniel.
“Oh, no you don’t. I know you want to play hero and get Dareli all by your lonesome, but that’s not going to happen. You need help.” Daniel said, putting his laptop away calmly as Dylan stared at him with angry eyes.
“Who? You? I doubt I alone could go in there but you wouldn’t be much help either bud.” Dylan said, trying to walk off before Daniel caught him again.
“Do I need a leash on you? Not just you and me, but a few more…special friends of ours at the Pension. They aren’t going to kill Dareli or harm her until they have the baby, which they don’t, apparently. So we have time, as long as we keep that evil infant safe. Just remember not to touch it.” Dylan couldn’t even protest before Daniel was off to find a few choice people to use to help Dareli.
The pain was the first feeling Dareli could sense, her muscles throbbing to the timing of her pulse as she lay on a stone, cold and uncomfortable surface. She tried to get a sense of her surroundings, but felting nothing but the painful throbs and cold stone. The pitch blackness of the dungeon didn’t help either, the shadows to tightly packed for her to control or manipulate. After a few minutes of silent reflection and pain, Dareli lifted herself up, only to be held back by tight chains wrapped around her wrist, ankles and stomach. Cursing softly, she wiggled underneath the tight, raw chains, making them clink together piercingly in the painful silence. Soon, a small rectangular light formed to her right, blinding her with its bright light as the large rectangle filled. In the light was a silhouette of a man, a bucket in one hand and a chain of keys in the other. He put the bucket down by his feet, something liquid sloshing inside, hopefully water.
Squinting against the light that flooded the room, Dareli took advantage of the loose shadows. She formed a huge, solid ball with the shadows and slammed into the man, who was thrown to the side. The door shut, but she could hear the man’s cursing in the darkness as he panted for breath, the solid brick of darkness knocking the wind out of him. Dareli listened silently, feeling the vibrations of his footsteps as the man climbed to his feet, cursing underneath his breath. Still cursing vilely, the man crawled on the icy floor with his outstretched hands, looking for the bucket of water he placed down before entering. Once he found it, he stood and used his feet to find Dareli, kicking her harshly in the side, making her grunt in anger and pain.
“Wake up bitch.” With that, he poured the arctic water over her, soaking every bit of her. Dareli collected some in her mouth and spit it back up the man, hitting him in the side of his face and receiving a hard punch to chin in return. She turned her head with the force, but the smile of satisfaction never left her face, even though he couldn’t see her.
“Damn bitch…You be nice to me now or I’ll keep these damned chains on you and let you rot here.” Once he unclasped the chains from her wrist, feet and torso, Dareli jumped up, trying to tackle the man. Unfortunately Dareli still didn’t regain control of her muscles and was easily thrown off and into a wall, the man kicking her in the gut a few times. He cursed at her as he walked out, closing the door quickly and tightly as he sneered at the huddle Dareli. She had a coughing fit for a few minutes, feeling a few droplets of sticky, thick liquid on her hands, the metallic smell confirming it was blood. Wiping her mouth on her sleeve, she sat up on the wall, trying to adjust her eyes to the darkness with no luck.
Dareli rubbed the back of her neck, a raised and very sore bump stung at her slightly touch. She didn’t know what it was, or how she got it, but she left it alone, unknowing it was Daniels tracking device. Dareli slumped on the wall and waited for someone or something to come back, hopefully to save her, but probably to torture her.
The entire Pension was silent, everybody sent back to their rooms except for an about 5 or 6 students who were all huddled around a table in the social floor of the house. Daniel was holding on to his laptop tightly as he spoke to those chosen kids, all of them listening intently with worried faces. Dylan ran in after a while, giving a report to Daniel that everybody was in their rooms and safe.
“How did he get in?” Dylan asked, sitting on the table in an Indian fashion.
“I don’t kn-” Daniel stopped short of his answer as he pieced together possible answers as to how the trespasser got in. Daniel looked at Dylan, his eyes terrified and his mouth open in shock, Dylan instantly understanding what he was thinking. Both jumped up from the table and ran to the front door, opening it quickly and expecting to see a shattered Steven all over the front. But Steven was unharmed, still in his wondering gaze at the house.
“Oh…Hey Steven. Well that’s a relief.” Dylan sighed and turned back inside, but Daniel’s intelligence finally kicked in and he realized it. Pushing Dylan aside, Daniel ran for the stairs that led to the attic. Dylan stared after him for a few seconds before grunting angrily and following.
Daniel reached the attic just a few minutes before Dylan and was on his knees, his head down in sympathetic grief. Cura, their beloved Guardian in the attic, laid in shattered pieces that covered the floor and walls of her small corner of darkness. Dylan’s anger subsided into pity, putting an exasperated hand through his short hair and turning away from the mess. Daniel reached a hand out to grab a piece with one crystal blue eye, gazing through it hopefully, but like the statue, his heart was shattered.
“Oh young boy…I have failed….” The deep-set feminine voice echoed through the attic weakly. Daniel jumped slightly in surprise, startled she could still talk.
“Who did this to you Cura?” Daniel said gently.
“The same human who has taken Dareli, and plans to take Joon.”
“Who is Joon?”
“The infant.”
“How do you know her name?”
“Because she is my child.”
